In order to provide our patients with the highest quality of dental services, we use digital radiographs( commonly referred to as X-rays) and an Intra oral camera in our office. Digitial Radiographs and Intra oral images provide us with invaluable information about your oral and dental health.
While all radiographic equipment does produce some radiation exposure, modern advances in digital technology are continually reducing the amount of radiation that is produced. In fact, studies have shown that the amount of radiation produced by these machines is not significantly higher than other “normal” sources of radiation that we are exposed to on perhaps a daily basis, such as televisions and airplanes.
X-rays work on a simple principle: the X-rays are stimulated and sent through the mouth. When these rays pass through, they are absorbed more by the bones in your mouth than the gums and other soft tissues, creating a picture of how the teeth inside your mouth are positioned, as well as any potential areas of weakness or decay in your teeth.
While this radiation is very low, it is still recommended that pregnant women avoid any routine X-rays. However, pregnant women should avoid infections and are also more vulnerable to gum disease, so some limited x-rays may be prescribed. In that case proper precautions will be taken, such as using a lead apron, and the pregnant patient properly treated.
With the intra oral camera technology we are able to enhance your understanding of the current condition of your oral cavity. An intra oral camera is a very small camera which allows our staff members to view clear, precise images of your mouth, teeth and gums. These images are saved in your file as a permanent record. These images can be printed for you or shared electronically with other specialists, dental labs and your insurance company to better facilitate your treatment.
